Hart and Hind is named for the deer which roam our orchard. A hart is a male deer; a female deer is a hind.
Our cider farm is located on the southern boundary of the once vast Forest of Windsor, the royal hunting ground of English kings in the Middle Ages. Reference to this royal past can be found in names like Stag Hill and Park Barn in Guildford and the town’s ancient castle where kings stayed when hunting deer locally. Today roe deer roam wild on our farm. The orchard, wildflower meadow and the woodland provide a safe and serene habitat.
Deer will happily chew up an entire young apple tree, so many apple growers consider deer pests and try to fence them out of the orchard. We let the deer roam and protect each young tree with wire netting, until it is large enough for the deer and tree to coexist.
The diverse ecosystem on our farm helps keeps pests in check, allowing minimal input sustainable agriculture.
Our 2023/24 vintage has gone, but if you'd like to stock our cider in future, get in touch.
